Blue Moon

I love the moon and all the folklore around it. Tonight shining upon us is the one commonly called a blue moon because it's the 2nd moon in a month. Though it could also be linked to the 4th moon in a season. Romantically it's a lovely thought that this is a special moon and I'm happy to buy in to that wish making and romance. A bit of wish making and romance can brighten anyone's life but I don't see it as particularly significant from a pagan or spiritual point of view.

Factually the idea of an extra special Blue Moon is not thousands of years old, it came about with what seems to be man's insatiable desire to tide up nature and make it run according to a plan devised by humans. Like the calendar itself, the moon has been made to fit in to what is our normal year span now. This will normally consist of 12 moons which match with the 12 months but as the saying goes 'once in a blue moon'  an extra moon makes an appearance and puts the human plan out of joint.

To our ancient ancestors this wasn't a particularly special moon. Life revolved around the moon cycles, times for planting, harvest and celebrations were marked by it. All moons were special and that is how I feel too. I'm happy to call this by the current idea of  blue moon and yes I think it's special but no more so than the moon at the beginning of this month or the one next month. I celebrate them all.

The moon is a constant companion for us on earth, it's proved inspiration for millennium. We've made up stories, songs and various cultures have given it different names to coincide with different times of the year. At various times mankind has seen this extra moon as bringing bad luck, but more commonly now it's seen as being a force for good and extra special.

How ever you chose to view and celebrate tonight, I hope your dreams and hopes catch hold of some of that full  moon magic. As there will not be another one until 2015 lets just enjoy natures extra bounty in our human governed calendar.
